“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.”
Matthew 5:9

Religion

We will be learning about Jesus’ Ascension and Pentecost.  The children show such excitement about learning the faith and growing closer to God.  It is truly a blessing to watch the love they have for our Lord.

Spelling List

The children are doing a good job learning their spelling words each week.  I am also reminding the children to be sure to use what they have learned when they are writing in their journals and in other subject areas.   The test will be on Friday.
Be sure to practice a few minutes each day.  It is a good idea to practice both written and orally.

Reading

Next week we will be reading a Reading A to Z story.  I will also be assessing individual students.  The change in the schedule is due to the Science Fair.  The following week we will continue with the next story in the reading book.

Math

We are finishing Chapter 10 on addition and subtraction with numbers to 20.  We will be taking the chapter test at the beginning of the week.

The next chapter that we will begin is on money.  The class does a money activity during our calendar time each day.  The children will be practicing counting money with pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters with values to one dollar.  A great way to have your child work at home on this skill is giving them different groups of spare change.  They can sort the coins, count the value of the coins, make trades (5 pennies for a nickel) and other simple activities.

Social Studies

It was Earth day this week.  We discussed different and simple ways of how to care for the Earth.  The children are enthusiastic about being green!
We are continuing to work on using and creating maps.  The children truly enjoy learning about the United States and I am amazed of the facts they have learned.  I hope that they continue learning about our wonderful country.

Science

Please remember to have your child bring his/her Science Fair project in on Tuesday.  On this day the children will share their projects with the class and the other two First Grade classes.  On Wednesday, the other grade levels are invited to come and visit the Science Fair.  Parents are coming on Thursday to see all the wonderful projects.  The scheduled time is 11:15AM - 12:00PM on Thursday.  I hope that everyone will be able to come.
