Writing Ideas

                             kids and pencil

Reading and writing go hand in hand! As kids read, they improve their writing, and as kids write, they help their reading.

  • Beginning writers can draw a picture and then label parts of the picture.
  • Children can just put down the letters of the sounds they hear at first.  Encourage all beginning writing!
  • Keep a journal for vacations or fun excursions.  Children can draw pictures and write about all the things they saw and did.
  • Devote a spot to writing in your home—such as a small table or desk.  Add some fun paper, pens, stickers, stamps, and other items you can find inexpensively at a Dollar Store to motivate young writers!
  • Encourage your children to write letters to a friend or relative.  Kids LOVE getting mail.  This might help spur ongoing correspondence.
  • Children can make signs and labels for their bedroom or other areas or items around the house.
Help your child write clues for a treasure hunt around the house or outside.
