Religion - Program

The religious education program of St. Matthew School is based on the understanding that catechesis aims therefore at developing understanding of the mystery of Christ in the light of God's word, so that the whole of a person's humanity is impregnated by the word (CT #20). Accordingly, the definitive aim of catechesis is to put people not only in touch but in communion, in intimacy, with Jesus Christ: only he can lead us to the love of the Father in the Spirit and make us share in the life of the Holy Trinity (CT #5).

The scope of the elementary curriculum includes the Scripture, the creed, the commandments, the sacraments, and prayer.

The catechist proclaims the gospel message with respect for the uniqueness of the individual, within an atmosphere that fosters community, motivates to service in a spirit of justice and peace, and leads to worship and prayer.

Students attend a school Mass once a week.

There is Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, class visits to church, and Benediction on First Friday.

Each week one grade receives the Sacrament of Penance.
